K&L Gates is one of few international firms in Taipei with the capability to advise clients on local and cross-border legal issues. Our presence in Taipei enables us to remain at the global center for semiconductor and IT hardware business and a growing life sciences research hub, core industries of many of our local and regional clients.
Our presence in Taiwan is critical to our Asia strategy, as it allows us to assist our clients with their domestic commercial and legal needs, as well as access cross-border opportunities in China and beyond. Our lawyers in Taipei are further supported by our strong regional presence, which includes over 400 lawyers working across major Asia-Pacific commercial hubs (Beijing, Brisbane, Hong Kong, Melbourne, Perth, Seoul, Singapore, Shanghai, Sydney, and Tokyo) and our fully-integrated global platform of 2,000 lawyers across 45 offices on five continents.
We also regularly provide local and cross-border legal advice on the formation of funds and regulatory matters, securities, equity financing transactions, and international arbitration-related matters. We often advise multinational companies on legal issues encountered in doing in business Taiwan, including employment, privacy, product launch, consumer protection, and anti-trust issues.
We are heavily involved in overseas capital market deals, energy-related transactions, and intellectual property litigation.
We regularly assist Taiwanese companies looking for capital markets outside of Taiwan. Our Taipei office has successfully completed two Taiwan-listed biotech companies’ IPOs on NASDAQ and several ECB deals in 2018 alone, among other deals. We regularly assist investment banks and issuers with their global capital market needs, as well as act for domestic and international banks, asset managers and other financial institutions to establish funds and advise on securities and regulatory issues.
With the growing interest in energy sector deals driven by the Taiwan government’s clean energy policies, we leverage our transactional and energy-related experience to assist clients in pursuing deals in the solar power and windfarm sectors. In 2018, we represented and closed three major clean tech deals.
